CAN U 11- Restoring Everything Damaged (RED)
The Covenant University Global Dance Ministry (Reflections) stages her annual dance concert, popularly known as ‘CAN U’. The 11th edition was held on Sunday 1st of March 2015at the University Chapel and it was tagged ‘Restoring Everything Damaged (RED). The hosts were Ebiye, Eno, Lanre, Seun, and Chisom. The turn-up was not impressive at the beginning of the concert, but there was a massive overflow as it progressed.
The concert started with a short
prayer, then praise and worship by the Covenant University Contemporary Choir (Realms of
Glory). After this, there was an opening performance choreographed by Tobi Ogundipe which
depicted happiness and friendliness.
The Opening Dance titled ‘The Depression’ was
choreographed by Nwosisi Geraldine. The plot was to educate and enlighten on what young
people go through in their everyday lives. In this dance, there were three people dressed in black,
probably ‘Spirits’ who oppressed the three main dancers. The song was quite slow and expressed
sadness.
Each dance depicted a story.
The second dance expressed the typical human lifestyle and the
vanity behind it. This dance was performed by an invited dance crew. According to the song,
only Christ can save, every other thing is vanity. The dance depicted the need to be saved when
fallen. The dance transited quickly to Salsa which got the audience cheering heartily.
The next
dance by Reflections was titled the Worship dance. It was choreographed by Ngozi Okereke and
it was titled ‘Redemption’. It was a church setting where two people got saved, and in the event of
things, obviously led to the cross. The song used was ‘Lead Me To The Cross.'
The third dance
was set in a classroom. the song was ‘Grace’ and it was choreographed by Amakor Confidence.
The event's highlight was the performance of SSP, an invited dance crew. They
performed various dance steps ranging from Shoki to Sekem and even Salsa. They got the crowd
cheering and clapping. They even got a standing ovation at the end of their performance.
The
Fourth dance by Reflections titled the Hip Hop dance was choreographed by Misan. It depicts
Faith in Christ. The dressing for this dance was spectacular Old Skool with white shirts and
suspenders. The song used was ‘Praise you in the storms’ by Casting Crowns.
Another highlight of the program was the performance by Emma Oh Ma God who is a fast-rising comedian, talk show host, OAP, and instrumentalist. He is an alumnus of Covenant
University. His jokes got the audience laughing heartily. The Reflections Alumni presented a
dance that was a mix of different songs from Mali Music to Korede Bello’s Godwin.
The
traditional dance was choreographed by Damilola Oluwayemi. The song played during this
dance was Olorioko by Infinity. The decoration unit must be praised for the flowing river trick they
did with that blue cloth.
A notable gospel artist (who is also a student of Covenant University), Chris Rio performed at
the event. He was supported by a few Reflections members with their dancing.
Notable also is the
performance by Living Signatures, an invited dance group. They wore NYSC shirts, khaki, and
boots. Their entrance was staged like a marching parade. They got the crowd clapping to the
song they danced to.
Ebiye Victor, fresh alumni of Covenant University, performed at the event also, dishing out
rib-cracking jokes, He sure got the audience laughing and he got resounding applause at the end
of his performance. David Oghenerobor also ministered in worship.
The last dance was
choreographed by Oyintianane Phineas. It was titled ‘The Crowning’. It was unique in its own
way. The dancers wore Greek-inspired dresses, which symbolized our final moments on earth and
receiving a crown from God on the last day for a job well done on earth.
The closing dance was
titled ‘Testimony
and it was a happy dance, a happy song, and a great way to end the concert.
In his speech, the Chaplain of Covenant University, Pastor Promise Omidiora encouraged
everyone to acknowledge God in Praise and Dance.
The director of Reflections in his vote of
thanks extended the gratitude of the entire dance crew to the Chaplaincy, Student Affairs, The Registrar, the Student Council, The Covenant University technical Crew, the Decoration Unit, and Contemporary Choir amongst others.
Present at the occasion were The Registrar, Dr. Olumuyiwa Oludayo, the deputy dean of the
College of Leadership Development Studies, Dr. Amos Alao and his beautiful wife, The
Chaplain, Pastor Promise Omidiora, EmmaOhMaGod, Omotola Slasha of Koga TV, Ebiye
Victor (who are successful entertainers and Covenant University Alumnus), lecturers from
various departments amongst others.
Indeed, CAN U11 is one dance concert that will not be forgotten in a hurry.
